House lawmakers are set to survey the recycling landscape across the nation and consider whether the federal government should be more involved.
The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment will hold a hearing this week focused on recycling innovations — particularly the nascent technologies deemed “advanced” or “chemical” recycling.
“This hearing will provide a platform to examine new opportunities in the field of recycling, the current state of our recycling infrastructure, and whether current law can support the AI industry here at home,” said committee Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.), who is taking over the subcommittee gavel.
Most rules on recycling are left to state and local authorities to decide. But plastics industry groups want the U.S. government to take charge, primarily to counteract a growing patchwork of single-use plastic bans and extended producer responsibility programs.
