The House Science, Space and Technology Committee will mark up legislation this week that seeks to improve weather forecasting amid turmoil at the National Weather Service.

The “Weather Act Reauthorization Act,” H.R. 3816, is sponsored by ranking member Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), the committee’s former chair. The markup was previously scheduled for July but was canceled.

The legislation seeks to fund and improve NOAA forecasting capabilities and its work to inform the public, along with promoting collaboration with the private sector.

The bill comes as lawmakers have fretted over staffing at the National Weather Service — particularly after July’s deadly floods in Texas.
