Texas House Republicans are urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to expeditiously approve a major liquefied natural gas export project in South Texas after previous regulatory and legal setbacks.
The Texas Republicans, led by Rep. Wesley Hunt, sent a letter Wednesday asking current FERC commissioners to issue a final approval for the Rio Grande LNG project. The letter was also signed by Reps. August Pfluger, Randy Weber and Dan Crenshaw.
“Rio Grande LNG faced unnecessary delays caused by litigation and other factors that increased uncertainty and added delays for this vital project,” the lawmakers wrote. “We sincerely appreciate the Commission’s efforts to date and now look forward to the swift issuance of a Final Order.”
LNG company NextDecade is currently constructing the terminal in Brownsville, Texas, at the southern tip of the Gulf Coast near the U.S.–Mexico border. When completed, the project could ship up to 17.6 million tonnes of LNG per year. NextDecade has plans to expand the capacity of the facility even more if regulatory and economic conditions are met.
