A former high-ranking official in the District of Columbia’s office of the attorney general is moving to a new law firm.

Jason Downs, who served as chief deputy attorney general under ex-D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine (D), is now a partner at Hogan Lovells, where he will handle environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters and represent clients subject to state AG investigations under the supervision of his former boss.

“Jason is a great addition to our premier state AG practice, now led by former D.C. AG, Karl Racine,” said Des Hogan, head of the firm’s disputes practice group, in a statement Monday. “We’re extremely pleased to be reuniting this powerhouse team.”

During his time in Racine’s office, Downs managed all legal matters filed against or brought on behalf of the nation’s capital. While he was D.C. attorney general, Racine launched a climate liability lawsuit that asked major oil producers to compensate the city for their role in spewing planet-warming emissions and worsening floods, fires and other disasters.
