The leaders of 30 tribal nations are calling on the Biden administration to support a Wisconsin tribe in its fight against a segment of the Line 5 oil pipeline.
In a letter to President Joe Biden this week, tribal leaders from across the Great Lakes region said the United States should condemn the trespassing of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline on the Bad River reservation in northern Wisconsin. The tribes said the Bad River band shouldn’t have to proceed with “an existential fight” against Enbridge and Canada alone.

“It is time for the Biden Administration to step up to protect our reservation and watershed for the benefit of all,” said Robert Blanchard, chair of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, in a statement shared Wednesday by the Native American Rights Fund.
The Bad River Band has pushed unsuccessfully in the past for an immediate shutdown of the Line 5 pipeline on reservation lands — warning of dire consequences for Lake Superior if a spill were to occur.
