8 Senate races to watch on energy and environment

Candidates are seizing on solar energy, electric vehicles and disaster recovery to sway would-be voters.

Democrats have an uphill battle in their quest to take the Senate majority, and energy and environmental policy debates are taking the spotlight in some of the most hotly contested races.

Among the 35 Senate seats up for election this fall — 22 of which are held by the GOP and 13 by Democrats — party control is expected to remain unchanged in the vast majority. That includes a half-dozen open seat races in states like Minnesota and Wyoming.

But in the handful of battleground states — with incumbents fighting to keep their offices in Georgia and Maine, and open seat races in Michigan and North Carolina — candidates are seizing on solar energy, electric vehicles and disaster recovery talking points.

Primary fights are also prompting candidates in Massachusetts and Texas to prove their fidelity to green energy mandates or extractive industries, respectively.
