Soaring power demand and rising electricity prices have prompted federal regulators to mobilize. At the same time, Senate lawmakers may be close to a deal on broad permitting reform with language to bolster the grid. Congress is also weighing legislation focused squarely on data center energy use.

Policymakers have gone from talking simply about improving an aging grid and incorporating more renewable generation to dealing with a dramatic increase in demand.

“I think what’s happening right now is that the scale is unprecedented. The scale of growth is unprecedented,” editor Joel Kirkland said when discussing why grid issues are at the policy forefront.
