Amazon hits renewables milestone, weighs next moves on energy

The tech giant purchased enough renewable energy to match its power demand, even as it consumes an increasing amount of electricity.

Everything is bigger at Amazon.com, including the tech giant’s goals for emission reductions and clean energy.

The company announced last week it had reached its goal of matching all its electricity consumption with renewable power.

The announcement simultaneously underscored the staggering amount of wind and solar power Amazon has purchased since announcing its renewable energy targets in 2019, even as it highlighted the difficult road ahead for tech giants boasting lofty climate ambitions. It comes amid growing concerns over industry’s soaring electricity consumption amid the growth of artificial intelligence, which has complicated efforts to retire dirty power plants and slash planet warming pollution.

Amazon saw its electricity consumption grow by more than 60 percent between 2020 and 2022, making the announcement it had matched all its power demand with renewables even more impressive, said Kyle Harrison, a BloombergNEF analyst who tracks corporate renewable purchases.
