Another oceanfront home at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina’s Outer Banks collapsed into the ocean this week, the National Park Service said Tuesday.
Officials warned visitors to stay away from the water in the Buxton area, where the house was located.
The unoccupied house at 46227 Tower Circle Road was the 12th property on the national seashore to collapse into the Atlantic Ocean since 2020. A stretch of the shoreline from Buxton Village to Ramp 43 was already closed because of damage from Hurricane Erin, but a news release warned the seashore may need to expand the closure depending on the extent of the debris.
The first house collapse occurred in May 2020 in the nearby town of Rodanthe. Since then, the collapses — all until the most recent in Rodanthe — have become a recurring hazard for the popular Outer Banks destination as rising seas continue to eat away at the shoreline.
