Appropriators push more fiscal 2026 bills as shutdown talks heat up

Both House and Senate appropriators plan to send more spending bills to an uncertain future this week as the new fiscal year approaches.

Action in committee comes as House and Senate leaders discuss a plan to prevent federal agencies from shutting down at the end of the month.

The House Appropriations Committee will vote on its partisan Labor-HHS-Education and Commerce-Justice-Science bills. Over in the Senate, appropriators are expected to release a bipartisan Homeland Security proposal.

The more pressing deliberations — at least for now — will be happening in the Capitol’s leadership suites. Talks this week may reveal how close the country really is to the first shutdown since the first Trump administration.
