The Biden administration will hold a first-ever floating offshore wind auction in the Gulf of Maine this fall, it announced Monday.

The Oct. 29 sale, by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, will include eight lease areas in the gulf, which lies off the coast of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The sale will be the farthest north BOEM has held for offshore wind in U.S. waters to date and has faced pushback from Maine fishermen despite political support from the state’s Democratic governor.

Combined, the leases up for auction could support 13 gigawatts of wind power, or enough electricity for 4.5 million homes, according to BOEM.
