The Energy Department said the 19 state and local government awardees will receive “direct technical assistance” to adopt and implement energy codes and building performance standards.

The Biden administration announced plans Tuesday to award 19 state and local governments $240 million in Inflation Reduction Act funding to adopt energy-efficient building codes and retrofit buildings to comply with them.

The funding announcements, which are not yet final, are designed to help save residents of multifamily buildings and commercial building operators money on their utility bills while improving grid resiliency and cutting emissions.

DOE said the 19 awardees will receive “direct technical assistance” to adopt and implement energy codes and building performance standards. They are also aligned with the administration’s Justice40 initiative, which aims to deliver 40 percent of the benefits of federal investments to disadvantaged communities overburdened by pollution.
