Biden admin unveils wish list for UN plastics treaty

The list includes single-use items and carcinogenic chemicals, but it isn’t sitting well with environmental advocacy or industry groups.

The Biden administration offered more specifics on what it wants out of a United Nations agreement to end plastic pollution, currently undergoing its final scheduled round of negotiations.

U.S. officials unveiled the 18 chemicals and eight plastic products that countries should either ban, restrict or further evaluate.

The U.S. plan offers a menu of options and says each nation should pick one or more of the listed measures, which range from prohibiting all production to promoting more research.

The products that would be subject to some type of obligation under the U.S. plan include cigarette filters and skin care products containing microbeads as well as single-use utensils, packaging and carrier bags.
