The Biden administration began an investigation into the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, the latest in a series of moves aimed at keeping Chinese vehicles out of the U.S. market.

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security will lead the probe, using an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking to collect information. It’ll focus on Chinese-made vehicles and automotive technology that connect to the internet, including electric cars and future generations of automated vehicles.

In a statement, President Joe Biden linked the security questions to the broader issue of preserving the American auto industry.

“China is determined to dominate the future of the auto market, including by using unfair practices. China’s policies could flood our market with its vehicles, posing risks to our national security,” he said. “I’m not going to let that happen on my watch.”
