The Fish and Wildlife Service’s plans to significantly expand the boundaries of a Texas wildlife refuge would be shot down under a revived House measure set for a Capitol Hill hearing this week.

Authored by Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), H.R. 839 would block the federal agency’s “land protection plan” for the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge.

The plan finalized last year would authorize the refuge’s expansion to as much as 700,000 acres through acquisition or conservation agreements reached with willing landowners.

The refuge currently spans 6,440 acres. It was established in 1935 and is the oldest national wildlife refuge in the state.
