The legislation would require 30 days’ notice for public land transactions and that appraisals involved in deals be made available.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — State legislators filed bills Tuesday that they said would require more public notice and opportunities for involvement before Florida agencies consider trading or selling state land.

Details: The legislation was prompted by a proposal last spring to trade 600 acres along the Guana River south of Jacksonville for rural land elsewhere, state Rep. Kim Kendall (R-St. Augustine) said Tuesday.

The bill would require 30 days’ notice for public land transactions and that appraisals involved in deals be made available. The legislation also calls for clear statements on why certain lands are no longer deemed necessary for conservation.

“I want more notice,” Kendall said Tuesday. “Instead of seven days’ notice, we want a 30-day notice. And we want an appraisal. Just more transparency, clarity and notice.”
