A bipartisan group of House lawmakers is looking to map a safer future for the endangered right whale and other species.

Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui of California and five of her colleagues are introducing an updated version of the “Whale Conservation Habitat Analysis, Research and Technical Strategies (Whale CHARTS) Act.”

The bill aims to strengthen whale protections by developing movement maps, species surveys and detection technology for scientists and public mariners.

The bipartisan measure specifies “understudied species” such as baleen and sperm whales as its immediate focus and would dedicate $13 million to research annually through 2030. The funding would come, in part, from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
