A bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers introduced legislation Wednesday that would increase investment in ocean research focused on lowering carbon emissions.

The “Removing and Sequestering Carbon Unleashed in the Environment and Oceans (ReSCUE Oceans) Act,” from Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) and Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) is an increasingly rare bipartisan push to address climate change.

The bill would bolster research into marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), a developing strategy to combat climate change by using the ocean as a carbon sink to reduce emissions.

The legislation would set up a governmentwide framework for researching mCDR and would form new grant programs at NOAA focused on the technology.
