Lawmakers in both chambers have introduced legislation to require the Food and Drug Administration to study the impacts of microplastics on human health.
H.R. 4486 and S. 2353 seek to understand the primary causes of human exposure to microplastics and address specific vulnerabilities to children’s health, the endocrine system, cancer, chronic illness and reproductive health.
The Senate bill is sponsored by Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.). The House version is sponsored by Reps. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.).
“Microplastics threaten human health and our environment, and our bipartisan effort will ensure the federal government better understands the dangers they pose, ensuring a healthier planet and future for all Americans,” said Merkley, ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice and Regulatory Oversight.
