Nearly 200 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway — including Shenandoah National Park — reopened in Virginia on Friday after being closed by damage from Hurricane Helene.

The parkway’s entire North Carolina stretch remains closed, and crews are continuing to assess the damage.

The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway connects the Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks, stretching from Rockfish Gap, Virginia, to Cherokee, North Carolina.

Autumn foliage typically draws large numbers of visitors to the parkway, but North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) is heavily discouraging visitors this year, saying, “Significant and, in some areas, long-term work remains.”
