President Donald Trump wants to reopen the national park site and island as a prison. It closed in 1963 due to high operating costs.

Top Trump administration officials, including Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, visited Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay on Thursday, as the White House continues its push to reopen the historic prison.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office confirmed that Burgum and Attorney General Pam Bondi were set to appear at Alcatraz Island — which is located in the Democratic lawmaker’s San Francisco district — before the National Park Service site open for its daily tours on Thursday.

The Interior Department declined to comment on Burgum’s schedule, citing “safety and security.”

But the Justice Department confirmed that both Bondi and Burgum toured Alcatraz on Thursday to receive a briefing on the facility and direct NPS staff to collaborate on planning and rehabilitation needed to reopen the site as a prison.
