The Trump administration has proposed steep cuts to the park service and may lay off additional staff.

The Association of National Park Rangers has launched an advertising campaign at bus shelters in the nation’s capital, slamming Interior Secretary Doug Burgum for his efforts to shrink the National Park Service.

The ads, designed to mirror classic 1930s and ’40s-era park posters, poke fun at how cutting staff could degrade national parks. One ad showcases a climber struggling on a cliff in Utah’s Zion National Park with the text: “Injured or lost? You may have to save yourself. Fewer search and rescue teams thanks to cuts from Sec. Doug Burgum.”

Another ad winks at reports of unauthorized parachutists and campground squatters at Yosemite National Park during the government shutdown. Burgum has disputed news reports suggesting the park wasn’t able to respond to illegal BASE jumping during the shutdown.

“These ads highlight just how enormous the impacts of Burgum’s cuts are on national parks across the country,” said Bill Wade, executive director of ANPR, in a statement. “Our national parks are the pride and joy of America — why would the administration threaten what the American public loves so much by cutting National Park Service funding and staffing?”
