California’s greenhouse gas emissions declined by 3 percent in 2023, according to new data that state air quality regulators released Thursday.
What happened: The state recorded its third-largest drop in year-over-year emissions since the California Air Resources Board started tracking greenhouse gases statewide in 2000, data collected through the state’s mandatory reporting program and from local air districts showed.
Total emissions are also on track to decline in 2024, CARB officials estimated based on preliminary data, though a final report is not expected until late next year.
“Today’s milestone once again confirms that bold climate action can deliver real results,” said California Air Resources Board Chair Lauren Sanchez. “California’s climate pollution is falling even as our economy grows.”
