California lawmaker to remove language blocking cities from banning new gas stations

SACRAMENTO, California — The lawmaker behind legislation that would block California cities from banning new gas stations said she plans to amend the bill to remove the proposed prohibition.

What happened: State Sen. Aisha Wahab (D) told POLITICO in an interview that her bill, SB 983, was never intended to include provisions that would dictate how local governments manage gas stations within their borders.

Wahab said a new staffer had erred by including the language and that it will be removed after the 30-day waiting period before action can be taken on new bills.

“There is no moratorium on the cities banning gas stations,” she said. “Cities, in my opinion, are allowed to do whatever they deem fit for their locality. I want to be very clear about that.”
