A bipartisan group of state lawmakers has revived a bill backed by comedian and TV personality Jay Leno that would exempt old collector cars from California’s smog check requirement.

What happened: Senate Transportation Chair Dave Cortese, a Democrat, and Republican state Sen. Shannon Grove introduced SB 1392 late Friday, renewing an effort that failed last year to expand the list of vehicles carved out from smog-check rules.

The bill lists more than a dozen other state lawmakers as co-authors.

Why it matters: Cortese adding his name to the bill, dubbed “Leno’s Law” in a nod to the comedian’s extensive collection of rare cars and his support for the legislation, could give it a boost after the previous version Grove authored, SB 712, unceremoniously died in the Assembly Appropriations Committee last year.
