California’s Legislature is set to vote Saturday on extending its landmark carbon cap-and-trade program through 2045, a move advocates say could push back against President Donald Trump as he dismantles federal climate policies.

The vote to preserve cap-and-trade past its 2030 expiration date comes after Trump in April ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to look for ways to undo state climate programs.

Top Democrats believe they have the votes to pass the measure, which gained support from Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom crafting the bill with legislative leaders.

If California lawmakers approve the extension, the program could link with a similar cap-and-trade program in Washington state. Washington needs California to extend its program before the markets can merge.
