The Louisiana senator boasts a long record of backing policies to boost the oil and natural gas sectors — something President Donald Trump’s hand-picked challenger lacks.

Rep. Julia Letlow’s decision Tuesday to jump into Louisiana’s Senate GOP primary thrusts incumbent Bill Cassidy — a longtime leader on energy issues — into even greater peril as he looks to hang onto his seat for a third term.

Letlow launched her campaign just days after President Donald Trump endorsed her for the position, a major boost to her chances. Cassidy is a top target for Trump after the senator voted in 2021 to bar him from office in his impeachment trial due to his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“I have fought alongside President Trump to put America first, standing up for our parents, securing our borders, supporting law enforcement, rooting out waste, fraud and abuse that drives up inflation and fighting to fix an education system too focused on woke ideology instead of teaching,” Letlow said in a video announcing her bid.

“A state as conservative as ours, we shouldn’t have to wonder how our senator will vote when the pressure’s on,” she continued, without mentioning Cassidy. “Louisiana deserves conservative champions, leaders who will not flinch.”
