Prosperity won’t be achieved selling more timber to the U.S., Canada’s natural resources minister said.

Canada is launching a new forestry strategy as the sector continues to get walloped by the Trump administration’s trade war.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson called the forestry sector “the canary in the coal mine when it comes to American tariffs” during a speech Friday at an Empire Club luncheon in Toronto.

“Our goal for the Canadian forestry sector is not only for the sector to survive but thrive again in every one of the 300 rural and Indigenous communities who depend on forests for their life,” he said. “The U.S. market is not how we unlock this prosperity going forward.”
