Senate Environment and Public Works ranking member Shelley Moore Capito made made clear Wednesday she’s not entirely on board with the White House’s decision to renominate Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chair Christopher Hanson for another term.

During his confirmation hearing, Capito (R-W.Va.) said Hanson’s record shows several blemishes — including his flexible policies on telework and a decision to delay the potential relicensing of existing nuclear reactors.

Capito’s vote could be critical in ensuring Hanson clears committee and remains on the regulatory panel. His current term expires June 30.

Capito said that Hanson had “made policy decisions that I have some concerns about. For example, he voted to reverse previous commission decisions to issue license extensions, a vote that resulted in a cascade of uncertainty for the nuclear industry.”
