TALLAHASSEE, Florida — A pair of bills filed ahead of Tuesday’s start of Florida’s legislative session is raising concerns among some environmentalists who said they are already playing defense against a flurry of bills they oppose.

Details: State Sen. Keith Truenow (R-Tavares), chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, on Friday filed a bill that would require agencies to allow cattle grazing where it is deemed suitable on state lands.

State agencies now manage state parks, wildlife management areas and state forests among other lands. The bill, S.B. 1658, does not exclude any of those categories from cattle grazing.

“This is taking a sledgehammer approach to an issue that could result in some unintended consequences not only to public access but water quality,” Ryan Smart of the Florida Springs Council said Monday.
