Chinese firms are making major strides in the global competition to decarbonize the auto sector, according to a new report from the nonprofit International Council on Clean Transportation.

More than half of all electric vehicles sold globally in 2024 took place in China, with over 11 million total sales, says the annual report, which was released Tuesday.

Tesla ranked No. 1 in decarbonization among 21 global automakers. Companies were scored on sales totals, charging speed, driving range, future targets and other factors including, for the first time, green steel.
