BRUSSELS — China is suing the European Union at the World Trade Organization over the bloc’s imposition of duties on made-in-China electric vehicles, the country’s commerce ministry said Friday, adding to the rising trade tensions between Beijing and Brussels.
The two sides have been engaged in finding a negotiated solution to the trade dispute, but Beijing is now taking the row up a notch, claiming the investigation into subsidies is not in line with global trade rules.
In a statement on its website, the ministry claims it “brought the EU’s temporary anti-subsidy measures on electric vehicles to the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism” Friday.
WTO spokesperson Ismaila Dieng confirmed to POLITICO that the Chinese request had reached them Friday. “Further information will be made available once the request has been circulated to WTO members,” he added.
