The bill would require certain fossil fuel companies to contribute to a state fund to compensate for their impact on climate change.

A potentially landmark environmental bill is expected to move forward in the state Senate just before the end of the session, a key lawmaker said on Monday.

The Climate Superfund Act, NJ S3545 (24R), will be posted for a January hearing in the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, said Chair Paul Sarlo.

Sarlo said that it was done “at the request” of Senate President Nick Scutari and state Sen. John McKeon, who is the bill’s top backer.

“That bill will be posted on January 8 here,” Sarlo said.
