Committee approves nuclear nominee but punts on TVA pick

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee delayed a vote on a Tennessee Valley Authority nominee amid ethics concerns.

President Donald Trump’s nominee to fill the fifth and final open seat on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cleared committee Wednesday.

But Environment and Public Works Committee lawmakers did not vote on a contentious pick for the Tennessee Valley Authority board.

Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said the panel would consider Lee Beaman “at another time.” A committee spokesperson did not provide additional details.

Beaman, a Republican megadonor and businessman, has faced sustained scrutiny from Democrats over several issues, including his ownership of a townhouse alleged to be part of a far-right, “secretive D.C. influence project,” his ties to pastor and close confidant Steve Berger, who has allegedly made anti-LGBTQ comments, and potential campaign-finance violations.
