The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will vote on legislation this week to increase U.S. energy collaboration with Taiwan and address illegal mining and fishing.
S. 2722, the “Taiwan Energy Security and Anti-Embargo Act,” from Sens. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.), seeks to increase liquefied natural gas exports to Taiwan and boost the island’s use of nuclear energy.
The legislation’s goal is to protect Taiwan from Chinese pressure and a potential future embargo. China claims Taiwan, which has governed itself for decades, as part of its territory.
“Energy security is a glaring vulnerability for our Taiwanese partners. Unleashing America’s energy resources and expertise to strengthen Taiwan’s resilience serves both the U.S. and Taiwan’s national security interests,” said Ricketts in a statement.
