Two House panels will hold hearings this week on weather forecasting and natural disaster response during a period of heightened scrutiny about the administration’s oversight of both.
The House Appropriations Committee will conduct oversight of the National Weather Service on Wednesday after months of lawmakers expressing concerns about government reorganization work hurting the agency. The Commerce-Justice-Science Subcommittee will question Taylor Jordan, assistant secretary of Commerce for environmental observation and prediction.
The NWS was hit hard bycuts when President Donald Trump took office and launched the Department of Government Efficiency. Lawmakers responded by moving to bolster the agency for fiscal 2026.
Also, both the House Science, Space and Technology Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee recently advanced broad legislation meant to strengthen forecasting.
