Wild horse advocates got a potential boost from Congress in their fight to keep a herd roaming across the Badlands at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.
Tucked in an appropriations bill recently approved by Congress is a measure from Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) that recommends the National Park Service allow wild horses to remain at the park.
The park service is expected to release its decision on the herd’s future in April as part of its efforts to create a park management plan for “livestock.”
Advocates believe the measure signals Congress could withhold funds that go toward removing the wild horse herd and hope it will ultimately push NPS to reexamine its proposed plans.
