Wyoming Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis, chair of the Senate Western Caucus and a longtime ally to the ranching and energy industries, is retiring.

Lummis, 71, said in a Friday statement that she would not run for reelection next year. She has served just one term, though previously served in the House for eight years.

“Deciding not to run for reelection does represent a change of heart for me, but in the difficult, exhausting session weeks this fall I’ve come to accept that I do not have six more years in me,” Lummis said in the statement. “I am a devout legislator, but I feel like a sprinter in a marathon. The energy required doesn’t match up.”

Though Lummis has taken on a reputation as a top champion of cryptocurrency, she also has pushed a number of environmental and land-use priorities. She sits on the Environment and Public Works Committee and chairs its Clean Air, Climate, and Nuclear Innovation and Safety Subcommittee.
