House Democrats are planning to use a House Natural Resources hearing this week to question President Donald Trump’s mineral spending spree and equity stakes in companies from Alaska to California.
Republicans on the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, led by Chair Paul Gosar of Arizona, said a hearing on Tuesday will focus on the mineral supply chains vulnerabilities and permitting, but Democrats say they’ll probe possible corruption tied to the administration’s deals.
“Within the minerals industry, corruption is bad for business, stable supplies, quality and quantity of output and environmental protection,” said a Democratic aide granted anonymity to speak candidly.
Rep. Maxine Dexter of Oregon is the subcommittee’s ranking member. The aide added: “President Trump has created a new slew of sketchy [taxpayer] investments through equity [stakes].”
