California Democratic Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán and a group of House colleagues are urging the White House to take further actions against carbon emissions from cargo ships.

Barragán, who represents the Port of Los Angeles, led 15 other members in a letter asking President Joe Biden to issue an executive order to support the decarbonization of the maritime industry.

The letter calls on the administration to use the Clean Air Act and other existing authorities to establish a goal-based fuel standard and eliminate U.S. port emissions by 2030.

The letter noted the president’s commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector by 2050. “We now ask that you build on these commitments by issuing an Executive Order to spark innovation and open opportunities for decarbonizing the maritime sector and future-proof this critical component of our supply chains.”
