Democrats on Monday demanded answers from President Donald Trump about Elon Musk’s incursion into NOAA, the nation’s primary weather and environmental science arm.
A letter from Reps. Deborah Ross of North Carolina, ranking member of the House Science Subcommittee on Energy, and Eric Sorensen of Illinois, a meteorologist, comes as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency continues to tear through agencies at a rapid clip, gaining access to critical information systems and calling for cuts.
After DOGE’s entry into NOAA last week, Democrats warned that Musk could be attempting to take control of the National Weather Service, which operates an array of satellites, buoys, balloons and radars.
Musk — who runs SpaceX and Starlink and owns the largest satellite fleet in orbit — seems singularly suited to benefit from weather service privatization.
