The disclosure of a nonprofit group’s potential multimillion-dollar take from President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project is raising the ire of Democratic senators, who say greater transparency is needed.

In a letter to lawmakers released Monday, the Trust for the National Mall said it could collect as much as 2.5 percent in fees for managing donations for the ballroom. The group also says critics of the ballroom may be misleading people about its role.

“Over the last 18 years, the Trust has been dedicated to filling the funding gap that Congress is unable to meet for National Parks,” the group wrote in the letter.

“The misunderstanding of the Trust’s limited role in the White House Ballroom project persists, and the mischaracterization of that role, both in your correspondence and in the media, requires further clarification to avoid compromising the Trust’s important mission in partnership with the National Park Service,” the organization wrote.
