Senate Democrats are objecting to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s apparent plans to dismantle the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

In a letter to Zeldin on Wednesday, Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said documents obtained by Democratic staff show EPA intends to get rid of the program, which was established in 2010 and updated by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. It requires companies to report greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors of the U.S. economy.

“For the past 15 years, the GHGRP has collected facility-level emissions data from over 8,000 facilities, supplying vital information to policymakers, scientists, investors, and the public,” Whitehouse wrote.

“This data informs our national GHG inventory, supports international emissions reporting obligations, and serves as the de facto standard for many companies’ climate disclosures in the absence of industry-wide methodologies.”
