Senate Democrats are urging the Trump administration to strengthen environmental safeguards in the North American trade deal finalized during the president’s first term.

In a letter to Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, 21 senators called for better enforcement of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) environmental provisions. A review of the deal is set to launch this week.

“Strengthening the environmental chapter cannot be done by the Administration alone — it will require Congressional action — and we stand ready to work with you,” said the letter.
