Senate Democrats are urging the Trump administration to strengthen environmental safeguards in the North American trade deal finalized during the president’s first term.
In a letter to Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, 21 senators called for better enforcement of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) environmental provisions. A review of the deal is set to launch this week.
“Strengthening the environmental chapter cannot be done by the Administration alone — it will require Congressional action — and we stand ready to work with you,” said the letter.
Letter signers include Senate Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Dick Durbin of Illinois.
