Congressional Democrats are urging the Trump administration to block BP’s proposed Kaskida project in the Gulf of Mexico, more than 15 years after the company’s catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The Democrats say the project, which is projected to produce 80,000 barrels of oil per day and is slated to start in 2029, presents too big a risk of spill due to its depth and high pressure.

BP will be relying on technology capable of withstanding pressures of up to 20,000 pounds per square inch. The company has pointed to technology when vouching for the venture’s soundness.

In a letter addressed to Bureau of Ocean Management acting Director Matthew Giacona, the Democrats argue BP’s project represents an unacceptable threat to Gulf communities.
