The order follows a similar directive last week for a Michigan coal plant.

The Department of Energy reissued an emergency order Thursday to keep a fossil fuel power plant near Philadelphia online until late November, arguing that potential hot weather over the coming months makes ongoing operation of the plant necessary.

DOE is directing PJM Interconnection, the grid operator in the mid-Atlantic region, and the utility Constellation Energy to keep running two units at the natural gas and oil-fired Eddystone Generating Station.

The department issued the original emergency order under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act in May.

The order is part of a broad effort by the Trump administration to force utilities and grid operators to continue to run fossil fuel plants that are slated for retirement.
