Many federal initiatives to advance electric vehicles may be on the chopping block, after they appeared on a list of potential cuts circulating in Washington.

The Department of Energy has already canceled 300 grants worth more than $7.5 billion. But a list that emerged last week would cut hundreds more, bringing the total up to $24 billion.

The list’s contents have not been confirmed by DOE. But they include EV programs that range from efforts to retool existing auto factories and provide cash infusions for ambitious battery startups to EV-charging initiatives and consumer-education campaigns.

DOE never provided a full list of its the 223 projects it canceled two weeks ago, meaning it’s possible that some of the EV programs that show up on the most recent list were part of the original cuts.
