The Biden administration announced Friday that it will award $62 million to “clean” hydrogen projects in 15 states, as part of its push to build out the nascent industry.

The proposed awards from the Department of Energy would support 20 projects to develop and demonstrate various hydrogen technologies. The highest amount of funding is slated to build a “hydrogen fueling station of the future” that could power trucks, with $40 million going to four projects led by companies based in Arizona, California, Connecticut and New York.

Other projects would support hydrogen fueling stations for medium-sized and heavy-duty vehicles, develop fuel-cell-powered port equipment, improve community engagement with the hydrogen industry, and help DOE identify siting and installation challenges.

“America is leading the world in the development and deployment of clean hydrogen — a versatile fuel critical to reducing emissions from the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors of our economy,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in a statement.
