DOE renewable lab slashes 134 jobs

Cuts at the National Laboratory of the Rockies come after layoffs in May, when the lab was still named for its focus on renewable energy.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies in Colorado laid off 134 employees Monday, adding to staffing challenges at a Department of Energy facility long associated with renewable power.

In a statement, lab spokesperson David Glickson said the move affected employees working in both research and operations.

“These actions were taken to adjust to existing and projected funding levels and alignment with DOE priorities,” Glickson said. “We recognize the meaningful contributions of those impacted and the role they have played in advancing the laboratory’s work.”

The Trump administration has aimed to refocus the lab, which was formerly known as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. When it was renamed in December, Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson said “the energy crisis we face today is unlike the crisis that gave rise to NREL. We are no longer picking and choosing energy sources.”
