The Department of Energy on Wednesday announced nearly $85 million in grants to boost heat pump production in the U.S., as some manufacturers say sales of the climate-friendly heating and cooling systems are lagging.

Four producers will receive the grants, DOE said. A.O. Smith Corp., Daikin Comfort Technologies North America, Modine Manufacturing and Bitzer Scroll plan to use the funding to produce heat pumps or related products like compressors.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the grants will help strengthen the U.S. electricity grid.
